For the beginner kids – Scrunchies!

Kids Sewing Class: Making a Scrunchie

Materials Needed:
1. Fabric (about 10 centimeters wide and 55 centimeters long)
2. Elastic (approximately 15 centimeters long)
3. Scissors
4. Pins
5. Sewing machine
6. Thread

Instructions:

Step 1: Prepare Your Materials
– Gather all your materials on a clean, flat surface.
– Choose your fabric. You can use any fabric you like, but cotton or flannel works well.
– Cut your fabric into a rectangle shape, about 10 centimeters wide and 55 centimeters long.

Step 2: Fold the Fabric– Lay your fabric rectangle flat on the table, with the right side facing down.
– Fold the fabric in half lengthwise, so the two long edges meet. Pin along the long edge to secure it.

Step 3: Sew the Long Edge
– If you’re using a sewing machine, sew along the long edge with a straight stitch. Leave a small opening in the middle.
– If you’re hand sewing, use a simple running stitch along the long edge, leaving a small opening in the middle.

Step 4: Insert the Elastic
– Attach a safety pin to one end of the elastic.
– Insert the safety pin into the opening of the fabric tube and thread it all the way through.

Step 5: Sew the Ends Together
– Once the elastic is threaded through, overlap the ends of the elastic by about 1 centimeter.
– Sew the ends of the elastic together securely. If using a sewing machine, you can do a few back stitches to reinforce it.

Step 6: Close the Opening
– Pull the fabric so the elastic is hidden inside the fabric tube.
– Sew the opening closed either by hand or with a sewing machine.

Step 7: Optional  for more advanced students – Add a Bow
– Cut a bow shape – It could be a rectangle shape again about 25cm long by 10cm wide. You could shape the ends if you like
– Stitch the bow ends and sides together inside out
– Turn the right way out, close the hole
– Tie a bow around your scrunchie – I like to cover the scrunchie seam

Step 8: Finishing Touches

– Trim any loose threads.
– Fluff up your scrunchie, and it’s ready to wear!

Congratulations! You’ve just made your own scrunchie! Now you can make more in different colors and fabrics to match all your outfits.
