Learn to Sew
To our Darling Rookie Stitchers π€©π
Well you are in the right place!!!!Β
Our Beginner Stitchers are called Rookies, and this is the place for you.Β
From working out HTF to thread your machine, understand patterns, fabrics or for a range of beginner sewing patterns:
It’s all here β¬οΈ
First Things First:
1. Beginner Sewing Machine
HTF are you supposed to know where to start?Β
Only AI knows how many different sewing machines there are to choose from – how in hell are you supposed to choose?Β
Check out these tips:Β
Fantastic Plastic: If you are going to go out and buy a starter machine, I recommend you buy one that has a bit of “growing room” without blowing your budget.
A great starter machine would be a Bernette B35- $450,Β a Brother JA1400 – $300Β or a Janome DC1000 – $300 or similar to any of these.Β
You can buy cheaper machines which will be fine to start but you will grow out of quickly if you really enjoy your new hobby. Know that you will get what you pay for. The super cheap machines are a lot less precise, a bit loose, and a bit clunkier.Β
Golden Oldie:Β
Often times, you will be able to access your Mum’s, Grannie’s or some other hand me down machineπΒ
Depending on the age and condition of the machine you may be in luck, or you may just be handed a headache you don’t need! Really old machines will have their quirks. If you are a Rookie Stitcher, you don’t need any extra challenges! Sometimes, servicing is expensive for older machines because the parts are hard to access. Weigh up your options – you wan the machine that will be the easiest for you to use to begin with. This might mean buying a cheap starter and them moving towards the Golden Oldie when you are more confident to work out it’s quirks π€ͺ
Dream Machine:
My favorite machine of all time is a Bernina B380. I think it might be about 10 years old? I bought it second hand and I use it every. single. day. and it’s awesome! I’m thinking of trading in another fancier Bernina to get another model like this. It’s hardy, reliable, has computerised memory stitches and never ever lets me down. To buy the equivalent of this new is about $1700. There are way fancier machines. I just looked up most expensive sewing domestic machine and it is a brother and comes with a $23,500 price tag. So $1700 looks like a BARGAIN!!!!

2. READY, SET, SEW-ing kit
The Ready, SetΒ Sew Kit is the perfect beginners sewing kit or the returning stitcher looking for a fresh start π€©βοΈπ§΅πͺ‘
The kit includes everything you need to get started (or back to your) stitchingΒ β¨
You will definitley need quality scissors (don’t use them for anything other than fabric) , quality thread (you don’t find quality thread in the supermarket – go to a sewing supply shop. Again – you will get what you pay for. Shitty equipment will make it less fun. Invest in decent equipment and you will have less issues π

When youβre learning to sew, choose fabrics that behave.
We recommend cottons, midweight linen, or linen blends. These fabrics are stable, easy to cut, and simple to stitch.
Skip the slippery or stretchy stuff for now.
Start with fabrics that hold their shape and build confidence first.
You can learn a little more about fabrics in our Fabric GlossaryΒ
